Musical Tombstones

This game is played as musical chairs, but with a Halloween music tape. Decorate the chairs as the players’ tombstones and watch kids laugh… and give them the chills!

Cover the back of a number of chairs with large paper grocery bags. Decorate each bag with an epitaph, skulls and ghosts to make them look like tombstones. Use a black marker to write the epitaph with each kids name, such as “Here Lies Peter” or “R.I.P. Steven”.

Scarecrow

Make up teams and choose a player from each team to be the scarecrow. Each team will have a bag of old clothes (shirt, overalls, gloves, oversized boots or shoes, hat, etc). As a relay, each player takes a turn reaching into the team’s bag to choose an item. He or she then puts it on the scarecrow being decorated. As soon as the scarecrow has the article of clothing completely on, that person runs back to tag the next team member, who must grab another item and decorate the scarecrow in turn. The first team to have all the articles of clothing on the scarecrow wins the game.

Ghost Bowling

Paint white ten empty soda bottles. Use a black marker to paint ghost faces on them. Find a small gourd and use it as a bowling ball to strike the ghost pins!

Beating the pinata is one of people’s favorite Halloween games. A zombie from the grave pinata is a great option for the older kids. The youngest ones might prefer our cute ghost in pumpkin pinata.

Witch Doll
This is a cute Halloween craft to place over the table or hang around the house. You can also plan this craft activity to amuse kids at your party.

You will need:
Old nylon stocking
Batting
Embroidery thread
Black bristle board (Posterboard)
Construction paper
Black wool (or yarn)
Star stickers (optional)
Twigs
Twine
Glue

Stuff a piece of nylon with batting and gather it around the base to make the witch’s head. To make the face, use black embroidery thread to sew the eyes, nose and mouth.
Make a cone from black bristle board and pull the extra nylon down into the hole of the cone. Glue the head onto the cone shape. Add a black construction paper cape to the cone. Glue a bunch of black wool to the top of the head and then add a construction paper hat made into a cone shape and decorated with sticker stars.

Make the broom out of a large twig with smaller twigs tied at the bottom and glue some twine at the end.

Hanging Victim

You will need:
Two sticks (at least 2′ long)
String
Old shirt and jeans
Work gloves/Surgical gloves
Newspaper
Black garbage bag
Tie the two sticks together to form a cross. This will be the neck and shoulders of the dummy. Then, put the shirt onto the shoulders, and fill it with newspaper.

Attach the pants to the dummy by putting string through the belt loops, and over the ‘shoulders,’ and fill pants with newspaper. Blow up or otherwise inflate gloves (stuff with newspaper), and tie to end of sleeves of the shirt. Then, fill the garbage bag, the hood, with newspaper, and tie onto the dummy’s neck

Halloween, or the Hallow E’en as they call it in Ireland , means All Hallows Eve, or the night before the ‘All Hallows’, also called ‘All Hallowmas’, or ‘All Saints’, or ‘All Souls’ Day, observed on November 1. In old English the word ‘Hallow’ meant ‘sanctify’. Roman Catholics, Episcopalians and Lutherians used to observe All Hallows Day to honor all Saints in heaven, known or unknown. They used to consider it with all solemnity as one of the most significant observances of the Church year.

The American version of Halloween Day celebration owes its origin to the ancient (pre-Christian) Druidic fire festival called “Samhain”, celebrated by the Celts in Scotland, Wales and Ireland. Samhain is pronounced “sow-in”, with “sow” rhyming with cow.

In Ireland the festival was known as Samhein, or La Samon, the Feast of the Sun. In Scotland, the celebration was known as Hallowe’en. According to the Irish English dictionary published by the Irish Texts Society: “Samhain, All Hallowtide, the feast of the dead in Pagan and Christian times, signalizing the close of harvest and the initiation of the winter season. Faeries were imagined as particularly active at this season.

Halloween has undergone many changes. From a pagan festival it was turned into a religious celebration and then it became again a pagan one. Some Halloween traditions date back to the time of the Celts, such as the Jack o’ lantern. Others, such as the custom of wearing costumes and playing the pinata party game appear much later in the history of Halloween.
